Students in grades six, seven, and eight learned about the science and warning signs of addiction with Courtney Lovell, an addiction prevention and recovery advocate whose visit to CMS was sponsored by Columbia County Pathways to Recovery. Ms. Lovell also shared her personal experiences with addiction, which for her began with drinking in 8th grade and quickly progressed to heroin addiction and eventually incarceration. At 19 she began her journey to wellness and discovered her purpose along the way. Today, Lovell promotes addiction prevention and recovery coaching and works to expand support programs nationally. She co-founded Our Wellness Collective and FindRecoveryCoaches.com and has served on the Health & Human Services Advisory Committee for Women’s Services and the Board of Directors for Families Together in New York State.
