Chatham Middle School is proud to announce that eighth graders Vanessa Oakley and Jack Galvan are our school’s nominees for the Siena College Courage Award, which honors students who have the courage to promote the ideal of a just and inclusive society that values diversity and uniqueness. The CMS student body and faculty voted for students who were kind, respectful and accepting of everyone.
Jack is involved in his school’s National Junior Honor Society, National Coalition Building Institute, Robotics Club, and also mentors a sixth grade student as part of the CMS Peer Buddy Club. He performs in the school band and jazz band, and plays soccer, baseball and hockey.
Vanessa has been one of her school’s Key Communicators since 6th grade, is involved in National Coalition Building Institute, and is a member of Peer Buddy Club, where she mentors a sixth grader. She is also active in her school’s Service Club, Drama Club, choir, and is a Girl Scout.
Vanessa and Jack join other students from around the greater Capital Region in being nominated for this award. A committee of area leaders in social justice issues will review the nominations and select three recipients to be honored at the College’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King Lecture Series reception in February.
Congratulations to these outstanding role models!
