Meet Hudson, Chatham High School’s new therapy dog. The collie-Labrador retriever-German shepherd-golden retriever mix joins the Chatham CSD team as a certified therapy dog and K-9 Good Citizen. He loves all people and dogs, is very smart, likes to do puzzles, and is absolutely obsessed with his favorite toy, the hedgehog. His duties include greeting everyone, helping students feel comfortable in school, and being there to help anyone who wants to say hi.
“It’s nice to see that he brings such a positive vibe into the high school,” said Hudson’s coworker, school psychologist Rachel Trainque. “Just to see how happy he makes the students and staff, they just light up.”
For students and staff alike, therapy dogs in the school setting can improve mood and well-being, and reduce stress and anxiety. They can help students focus, engage in learning, and feel more comfortable initiating conversations with others.
Hudson is also Ms. Trainque’s family pet. After observing at home how good Hudson is with others, she knew he would be a great asset for our school and set about getting him trained and certified. He now works closely with Ms. Trainque at school every day.
“My office door is open and people will walk by and say hi to Hudson. He has already opened up a lot of new relationships for students who may not have known what a school psychologist is,” Ms. Trainque added.
