Chatham Middle School is proud to announce it has nominated eighth graders Annaleigh Butts and George Eutzy for the Siena College Student Courage Award, which honors young people who actively promote the ideal of a just and inclusive society that values diversity and uniqueness.
Annaleigh is a student advocate with a strong work ethic who looks to create an inclusive school culture for all students. She is a member of her school’s NCBI program, through which she teaches younger students about diversity and has spoken about the obstacles she herself has faced. She exhibits bravery, calmness and kindness as she educates others and advocates for social justice issues. She is also a member of her school’s drama club and band.
George is highly respected by his fellow students and teachers alike for his calm and kind manner, and for the independence and bravery he exhibits around his peers. He speaks up about social justice issues and is quick to help any student to understand his or her schoolwork. George is also involved in track and cross country, plays the violin in the school orchestra, and enjoys kick boxing in his free time.
George and Annaleigh join other student advocates from around the greater Capital Region in being nominated for this award. A committee of area leaders in social justice issues will review the nominations and select three recipients for the award. Winners will be honored as part of the college’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture in January.
