students playing electronic instruments they made from everyday materials

Sixth graders taking general music for the second quarter wrapped up their music studies with a STEAM project featuring everyday materials and Makey Makey kits. The students each designed and coded a musical instrument and then demonstrated how to play that instrument for their classmates. Their creations ranged from stand alone pianos to slime and play-doh pianos, to candy and mushroom drum sets. This activity incorporated all the elements of a good STEAM project; they used science when learning what materials conduct electricity, technology & engineering when coding their instruments, art when constructing and playing their instruments, and math by using fractions to represent how long various notes were played. This is one of our students’ favorite general music activities and this quarter's class really knocked it out of the park!
