Who’s that kid in the corner? No, it’s not Rodney Dangerfield, it’s Chatham’s superintendent, Sal DeAngelo. On January 14, Dr. DeAngelo shadowed a CHS student for an entire day of classes to get a better feel for what a typical day at the high school is like for students and teachers during these extremely challenging times. The student, Mia Porritt, is a senior this year and also serves as Chatham’s Student Representative on the Board of Education.
“That day, all my classes had really good material and I would say it was a very good representation of the typical day in the life,” Mia remarked.
Their schedule included Chorus, where they practiced songs for the CHS Pops Concert, English, where students prepared for their senior presentations, Syracuse University Project Advance Economics, where they discussed the economy on both a global and historical scale, Management & Leadership, at which they heard from a guest speaker working as a manager in the STEM field, Spanish, where lessons were taught by a substitute teacher, Consumer Math, where they talked about purchasing a car and gas mileage, Physical Education, where Dr. DeAngelo was excused from participating due to a bum knee, and Psychology, during which the class discussed standardized testing then watched a TED Talk on the topic.
“Through this process, I got a first-hand look at our instruction during these difficult times rather than from the typical walkarounds I do,” said Dr. DeAngelo. “On behalf of my fellow classmates, I did ask teachers to go light on the homework because it was a long weekend.”
