Students from Chatham High School attended the Future of Healthcare student workshop at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) on February 7. The students started their day with a case study involving malaria and then dispersed across campus into groups led by ACPHS faculty to address the infectious disease from the perspective of one of four different disciplines – biomedical sciences, clinical & health sciences, social & behavioral sciences, or pharmacy & pharmaceutical sciences (depending on their area of interest). At the end of the morning, they reconvened to discuss possible solutions they had come up with. Students also participated in career planning exercises, toured the ACPHS campus with its state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, and met admissions staff.
The college allowed districts to bring six students. From Chatham, juniors Phila Visconti, Karina Lezama, Alexis Nehmens, Riley Barden, Lauren Elcox, and Eliza Braley attended, chaperoned by guidance counselor Amanda Carroll. They joined approximately 140 other top students from high schools around the region. Attendees were nominated by high school leaders for their achievements and interest in STEM careers.
