9th- and 10th-grade students taking English as a New Language at Chatham High School completed a unit focused on an author's purpose in writing. They explored various genres, including fiction, nonfiction, screenplays, and poetry. To deepen their knowledge, students interviewed Chatham teachers who also write. Additionally, one student conducted an online interview with former Chatham Middle School principal Michael Burns to learn about his journey in writing his children's book "Nervous Rex." The lesson culminated with the students creating an original newspaper layout, challenging them to become writers themselves and gain a deeper appreciation for why writers write.
