Chatham High School’s Science Links class took a field trip to the Lucky Rehabilitation Center in Spencertown to learn more about local wildlife and how the center rehabilitates injured and orphaned animals. Directors Susan and Maria Geel, and the class’ teacher, Mrs. Fischer (a licensed rehabilitator at the facility), brought the students through the facility where they were able to get up close to rabbits, squirrels, opossums, deer, and several species of birds. In class, the students had been researching local wildlife and learning about their niche in the environment. At the Rehabilitation Center, they were able to apply their knowledge and see how animals are treated, supported, and eventually released back into the wild. Highlights included meeting Ocean, a friendly fawn who voluntarily greeted the students, seeing possums from ages one-week to three-years old, and watching how baby birds are fed.
