Mrs. Reichardt's 5th grade scientists are investigating the effects when substances are mixed with water. Students created a sugar water solution by measuring and weighing water and sugar separately. Then, they poured the sugar into the water, stirred, and found some sugar dissolved because the weight of the sugar water decreased in mass. Following data collection over several measurements, students transferred a small volume of the sugar-water into a dish and let it sit out over the long-weekend. Students discovered that the water particles evaporated and left a clear, hard, crystallized solid mass of sugar in the dish.
