CMS Honors Area Veterans
Every year, Chatham Middle School honors local veterans with a special school assembly open to all veterans, current servicemen and women, and their families.
This year’s ceremony, held November 10th in the school’s auditorium, included select choral students singing “The Star Spangled Banner” and the 7/8 Grade Band playing “America the Beautiful.”
Members of Ghent V.F.W. Post 5933 and American Legion Post 42 in Chatham presented the nation’s colors as well as the flags representing each branch of the armed services.
The keynote speaker was U.S. Army 1st Sergeant (retired) Larry Eleby. In addition to being our guest speaker, Mr. Eleby is a substitute teacher here at the middle school.
After Mr. Eleby’s remarks, all the veterans present were asked to stand and be recognized while the audience applauded their service.
The lights were then darkened for a slide show of photos collected from students and staff of their many family members who served or currently serve in the armed forces.
The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence and was followed by a reception in the CMS Library with refreshments for the veterans, guests, and the students who participated in the event.
