Siena Admissions Advisors Talks College Planning with 8th Graders
It’s never too early to start planning for college! As part of our guidance department’s 8th-grade-to-9th-grade transition program, eighth graders heard from guest speaker Joe Kelly, an admissions advisor with Siena College, about what colleges are looking for in their prospective applicants. Mr. Kelly shared the eight major factors colleges look at when considering students for acceptance. Using giant flash cards as he talked, he invited the students to help him put each factor in its order of importance. Transcripts and SAT and ACT scores were at the top, followed by recommendations from school counselors and teachers, essays, extracurricular activities, a student’s interest in attending that particular college, and lastly, the accuracy and neatness of the overall application packet. With our 8th graders now starting to plan their first year of high school, Mr. Kelly recommended they begin planning for college as well by selecting classes and activities that will get them on the path toward meeting their goals.
