Fire Prevention Day
A student favorite at MED! During the morning of October 14th, volunteer firefighters representing the Chatham, East Chatham, Ghent, Red Rock, and Spencertown fire companies visited MED to talk about fire safety and what to do if there is ever a fire emergency, either at school or at home. Of course, no fire safety day would be complete without some fire trucks, so the event kicked off with an assembly in front of the school where the firefighters could show off some of their firetrucks, both big and small. They also showed the students the all the safety equipment they wear when putting out fires and rescuing people from burning buildings.
As a bit of a tradition at MED, the firefighters always dress a school administrator from head to toe in their heavy gear. As this was assistant principal, Mr. Burns’ first fire prevention day here, the honor fell to him! They even had Mr. Burns stop, drop, and roll!
Later, MED held a school-wide fire drill where 4th and 5th graders practiced evacuating the building through their classrooms’ emergency window exits. Firefighters then visited each classroom to talk with the students and answer questions, and our pre-k and kindergarten classrooms enjoyed a special visit from Sparky the fire prevention dog. The firefighters stayed around to enjoy lunch with our students before heading back to their fire stations. Special thanks to these firefighters and all our volunteer heroes who help keep everyone in our community safe.
