Newberry Award Reading Group

Newberry reading club discussing the book PaxMrs. Eager, school librarian, and Mrs. Debye-Saxinger, 7th grade English teacher, are piloting a mock Newberry Award reading group this year with 15 7th graders. Between January and April, the students will read a total of five titles that were nominated as contenders for the prestigious Newberry Award and meet in the school library for book club discussions during lunch. In April, they will vote on which book should be nominated the first ever CMS Newberry Book Award.

The titles they are reading are:

All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook by Leslie Connor

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Melanie Gideon

The Inquisitor's Tale by Adam Gidwitz

Pax by Sara Pennypacker

Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk

The program, designed to pique students' interest in reading, has them eagerly getting their hands on books, checking them out of the library and downloading them on electronic devices.
