Home & Careers Class Welcomes Guest Speaker from Food Service Industry
As part of the Home & Careers curriculum, students in grade 7 invite parents in as guest speakers to speak about their careers. On November 1st, students in Mrs. Hayes' Home & Careers 7 class welcomed the parent of Izabel Fugman and step-parent to Gabrielle Morse, Mr. Gary Fugman. He spoke to the students about his career background, including his Associate of Occupational Studies degree in Hotel Management and Culinary Arts. He shared information on his background which included roles that ranged from sous chef to the owner of a 250-seat restaurant. In 1999, Gary joined SAGE Dining Services as a Catering Manager and was promoted to Food Production Manager in 2000 and Food Service Director in 2002. In 2005, Gary was promoted again to District Manager and currently serves as the SAGE Area Manager in the Northeast United States. He ensures that operations are in compliance with SAGE standards, and that their services are consistently maintained at the highest levels.
While visiting, Gary led a hands-on cooking experience that students really enjoyed. With his instructions and guidance, students made two soups. This included making a mirepoix, dicing potatoes, de-boning a chicken, and chopping and sautéing bacon. They were given lessons on how to properly chop an onion, peel and mince garlic, and how to thicken a cream soup. By the end of class students had successfully made a chicken and rice soup and a bacon corn chowder. When that class dismissed, the 8th grade Family & Consumer Science students were the next class in, and they too were just finishing up a unit on careers. Gary was able to stay for that class as well and speak with them about his career experiences, and the 8th graders got to sample the amazing soups!
